Battery Testing and Characterization Laboratory

The IFE Battery Testing and Characterization Laboratory provide electrochemical testing of battery cells from laboratory scale to large commercial cells.

IFE is the leading institution when it comes to testing and characterization of batteries in Norway. We offer an extensive equipment portfolio and decades of experience in the field. The cells are stored and cycled in controlled temperature chambers, and the larger cells are placed in fire proof testing room and storage room. Accelerated testing and access to advanced life time models are available.

For small scale testing, such as coin cells and small pouch cells:

  • 250 test channels (0-5 V, 0-5 A)
  • Temperature control
  • Electrochemical testing available:
    • Galvanostatic cycling
    • rate measurements
    • electrochemical impedance spectroscopy

For larger, commercial cells:

  • > 100 test channels (0-5 V, 0 – 50 A)
    • Channels can be paralleled up to 500 A
    • Temperature chambers from -40 °C to 80 °C
    • Emulation of drive-cycles
    • Constant current, power, voltage and resistance cycling
  • Characterization of degradation with
    • Charge and discharge curvesCurrent pulse characterization
    • High precision Coulombic efficiency cycling
    • Entropy spectroscopy
    • dQ/dV (incremental capacity analysis)
    • Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy
