Summer School AI for Nuclear 2024

The Halden HTO Project has been asked by the Halden HTO Management Board to extend its role in knowledge transfer to the young generation and to contribute to competence building in the nuclear industry. Therefore, in co-operation with the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA), the Halden HTO Project will organise a Summer School on AI for Nuclear, 1 - 5 September, 2024.

Publisert: 25. April 2024

There has been a considerate increase in interest for the nuclear field in Norway the last years, and last year the Norwegian government provided funds for establishing the Norwegian Nuclear Research Centre (NNRC), which is a collaboration between IFE, the University of Oslo and the Norwegian University of Life Sciences. The main goal of the Centre is to increase Norway's competence within nuclear physics and nuclear chemistry relevant for several areas, including the nuclear back-end, safety of advanced reactors (including SMRs), radiation protection, nuclear emergency preparedness, environmental radioactivity and other fields. The Halden HTO Project will organize this summer school in collaboration with the NNRC.

The topics of the summer school will cover the basics of Artificial Intelligence for the Nuclear sector. This is a broad field, and we will cover regulation aspects, technical aspects such as the link between AI, digital twins and physics models, aspects of AI explainability and Human-AI teaming, as well as AI and robotics. All these topics will be discussed with a focus on nuclear applications, challenges and opportunities.

The conference venue is downtown Halden. It will be an in-person event only. In order to emphasize the networking aspect of the event, we will not offer a virtual or hybrid alternative. The summer school is primarily
aimed at young professionals in the beginning of their career, and will be informative both for regulators, vendors, and utility personnel. However, the summer school may be useful also for more experienced people wanting to know more about AI for nuclear. The lectures will be supported by examples from the Halden HTO experimental program.
