IFE i Os Alle i Halden

In recent years, the interest in nuclear power has increased significantly worldwide and in Norway. The need for expertise in various nuclear matters has been amplified because of geopolitical tensions and events. The social development we see in Europe is that nuclear power will be an important source of energy in the European power system for the next 100 years and an energy source for maritime activities. The Norwegian power system also has many dependencies on the European power system, so we consider it important to have a solid knowledge base in Norway about nuclear power. IFE will highlight the need for expertise and capacity in the following areas: (1) Regulatory matters, (2) Safety, (3) Technology, (4) Operation, (5) Waste management and (6) Legitimacy and adherence.

IFE does not take a position on nuclear power in Norway, it is a political issue. We will contribute to the debate on nuclear power based on our research, experience and expertise in the operation and safety of nuclear facilities over many decades.

Norway’s foremost competence environment in nuclear power

IFE Nuclear in Halden has three simulators for nuclear power, including a simulator for Small Modular Reactors. IFE has advanced laboratories to study operators in a control room, out in the field, in hybrid control rooms using VR, or in a security operations centre. IFE has developed various software tools that are used at different power plants.

The Research Division IFE Energi at Kjeller has advanced B-labs and conducts research on nuclear technology used in area mapping, environmental mapping, waste streams, flow technology and materials technology. IFE has a strong research environment in energy systems analysis where we develop and analyse energy scenarios, develop strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, analyse the composition of energy carriers and analyse possible future technology choices and energy efficiency solutions.

For customers and partners, the change of name means relatively little as IFE will continue to make experiences and services from the nuclear industry available and applicable to Norwegian industry and public organizations. IFE will continue with several of its digital initiatives, such as Digital Sovereignty and Cyber Security as these are important areas both within nuclear power, energy, other industry and the public sector.
